XMAS REVIEW: Quattrottave, “Natale”

Artist: Quattrottave
Album Title: Natale
Genre/Style: Choral
Release Year: 2008

This is one of the weirdest non-novelty albums I’ve ever heard. Quattrottave, I learned, is an Italian a cappella group. You’d expect them to sing in Italian, and they do, but they also occasionally try their hand at English. That is unwise. It’s an uncomfortable facsimile.

As for the songs themselves, the a cappella arrangements leave the recordings bright, but cold. When the group is singing exclusively in their mother tongue, the results improve, but this album is really too strange to recommend to anyone who isn’t an a cappella junkie. On the plus side, this is only the second group I’ve ever heard perform “Riu Riu Chiu”.

Rating: ★★☆☆☆

It might be worth sampling if you’re putting together a playlist, but you won’t want the whole album.
