XMAS REVIEW: Kim Robertson, “Christmas Lullaby”

Artist: Kim Robertson
Album Title: Christmas Lullaby
Genre/Style: Instrumental
Release Year: 2004

The harp isn’t an instrument you think about very often, probably only entering your thoughts if you happen to see or hear one. No one’s clamoring for the makers of Rock Band to add a harp controller. And yet, there’s no denying that it is a beautiful instrument. The question is, do you want to listen to an entire album’s worth of songs played exclusively on the harp?

That question may be best answered by Christmas Lullabye on which Kim Robertson plays solo on said harp. The effect is strangely unsettling, but the performances are gentle if not exactly soothing. It’s all very pretty, but not likely to lift your spirits. I think there’s a place for contemplative, moody holiday offerings, however, and on that score, this one doesn’t disappoint, even if most of the selections are too obscure to hold any Christmas associations to most people.

Rating: ★★★½☆

This is great lonely snowy day stuff.
